“Russian Students and European Teachers. 1880–1910”

In November 2020 Museum of Russian Impressionism in Moscow will host international scientific conference “Russian Students and European Teachers. 1880–1910”, timed to the exhibition of French painter Eugene Carriere (1849–1906). Works of Russian artists who visited Carriere’s workshop in Paris and who were fascinated by his art will be also shown at the exhibition.

The theme of the Conference is broader and dedicated to Russian artists who visited Europe and studied there in the late 19th – early 20th century. While some of painters went to Munich and other cities, most of them preferred Paris – the main artistic centre of Europe at that time. Some of painters preferred Munich and other cities. During these trips Russian artists visited exhibitions, museums and galleries, studied in private academies. However, the interaction between Russian and European painters at the turn of the 20th century has not been fully investigated to this day.

The Conference is intended to explore the stay of Russian artists in Europe in the 1880–1900s and the influence of European impressions and lessons on their oeuvre. Reports will consider what and where Russian artists studied in Europe, which private academies they visited, which old and contemporary masters most influenced them, as well as which place in biographies of Russian painters occupied these trips.
